FAQ

Answers to common questions.

Everything you need to know before applying — and where to go if you still have questions.

What does Open Access Labs (OAL) do?

OAL sponsors training and builds community resources to help everyday people gain practical, job-relevant digital skills. Our focus is access: lowering cost barriers and helping applicants pick the right learning path for their situation.

Which programs can I apply to?

We currently offer two pathways: the OAL Scholars Program (for students and young learners) and the Digital Upskilling Program (for adults and career changers).

What do you sponsor?

We sponsor online courses, certifications, and structured learning paths through platforms like Coursera, Udemy, Codecademy, LinkedIn Learning, and free resources like freeCodeCamp. Sponsorship amounts vary, but our typical budget is around $300 per person.

How does the application process work?

You’ll submit a short form. For the Digital Upskilling Program, you’ll also complete a brief AI-guided interview so we can understand your goals, constraints, and starting point and route your application appropriately.

Do I need prior experience?

No. We accept applicants across experience levels. What matters most is clarity of your goal, consistency you can commit to, and a realistic plan that fits your schedule.

How long does it take to hear back?

We review applications on a rolling basis. Most applicants should expect a response within about 2 weeks.

Why is there an AI interview?

It helps us gather the context we need to make a better recommendation for you — for example, what you’ve tried before, how much time you have, and what kind of learning style works best.

Will I see the AI interview summary?

No — the interview summary is generated internally and sent to the OAL team for review. We’ll reach out with next steps after review.

What if I’m not sure which pathway fits?

If you’re a student or young learner, the Scholars Program is usually best. If you’re an adult looking to upskill or change careers, the Digital Upskilling Program is the right fit. If you’re still unsure, contact us and we’ll help you choose.
